The Add Subtitles to Video tool allows you to add subtitles or captions to your video manually, import them from an .SRT file or generate them automatically. You can edit the subtitles and their style, download the edited subtitles as an .SRT file, and change the video format.
Please note that we only do hard subtitles. Hard subtitles are burned in, or hard coded, as an overlay over your video and cannot be turned off or on later in a player.
- Go to the Add Subtitles tool.
To add your video file, do one of the following:
- Click Choose file to select a file from your device.
- Drag and drop a file from a folder on your computer or laptop to the webpage.
- Hover over the arrow to the right of the button to select a file from your Google Drive, Google Photos, or Dropbox.
Once you have added the file, you can select to add subtitles manually, upload an .SRT file or generate subtitles automatically (automatic generation is in Beta, so some features may not work correctly).
- To generate subtitles automatically, click the Auto subtitles button. Scroll down to select the language you need, or look for it in the search field. This option is only available for registered users. See more about limitations.
- To add subtitles manually, click the button Add manually.
- To import subtitles from an .SRT file, click Upload .SRT. You can select a file from your device, drag and drop it from a computer folder, or choose a file from your Google Drive or Dropbox cloud storage.
Then click Generate.
If your video has no sound or you are not a registered user, you will not see the Auto subtitles button.
- To add a new subtitle under the selected one, click the Plus icon to the right of the subtitle field. To add a new subtitle at the bottom of the list, click + Add subtitle. The tool will set the timing automatically.
- To enter the subtitle text, in the right pane, select the subtitle field and start typing.
To specify the start and end points of the subtitle, do one of the following:
- In the right pane, click the timestamp box to the left of a subtitle and type the required values.
- In the timeline, click and drag a subtitle along the timeline to change its start point or drag the subtitle’s handles to change the start and end points.
- To shift all the subtitles in case they are not in sync with the video, click Start at at the top left of the timeline, and then input the new start point and click OK or drag the cursor (blue vertical line) in the timeline.
- To delete a subtitle, click x at the top right of the subtitle field. To delete all subtitles, click Delete all at the top left of the timeline (this option is available when you have more than 5 subtitles).
Use a zoom slider at the top right of the timeline to zoom in and out on the timeline.
Change subtitles style
To adjust the way subtitles look, in the right-side pane, click the Styles tab to select one of the predefined styles or customize the following settings:
- Subtitles position (place at the top or bottom of your video);
- Font (select any of the Google Fonts);
- Font size;
- Font color (select a color or enter its hex code);
- Background color and transparency.
The selected style is applied to all the subtitles.
Change export formats
To change the export format, select the file type of your choice in the Format list at the bottom.
To download your updated and edited subtitles, click the Download .SRT button below the timeline.
Export and save your video
- To save the file, click the Export button at the bottom right and wait for the process to complete.
Once you have exported the project, you can do one of the following:
- To review the file, click the Play icon in the Preview pane.
- To remove the watermark, click Remove watermark (you will proceed to the Pricing page to buy a Clideo Pro plan).
- To save the file to your device, click Download.
- To save the file to your Google Drive or Dropbox storage account, hover over or click the arrow to the right of the Download button.
- To return to editing, click Edit.
- To proceed with editing in another Clideo tool, under Continue in…, select one of the icons (a Clideo Pro Plan is required).
If the Export button is inactive, you have errors in timestamps. Such timestamps are outlined in red. To fix that, make sure the timestamps are in the correct format: 00:00:00 (Hours, Minutes, Seconds) and do not overlap.
